Tokyo Global Partner Scholarship Program

Tokyo Metropolitan University (TMU) offers the Tokyo Global Partner Scholarship Program to outstanding international students who wish to pursue a fully funded Master’s or PhD degree in Japan. The program supports graduate studies across a wide range of academic fields and is designed to promote international collaboration and innovation.

Funding:

• Full exemption from the entrance examination fee.

• Full exemption from the admission fee.

• Full tuition waiver for the standard duration of the degree.

• Monthly stipend of JPY 150,000.

• Economy-class airfare to Japan and a return ticket after completing the degree.

• Housing referral and accommodation support services.

• Funding is provided for two years for Master’s students and three years for PhD students.

Eligibility:

• Master’s applicants must normally hold or be expected to obtain a Bachelor’s degree.

• PhD applicants must normally hold or be expected to obtain a Master’s degree.

• Applicants must have a GPA of at least 2.30 according to TMU’s conversion system.

• Applicants must meet the program’s geographical or institutional eligibility requirements. In general, candidates must be affiliated with a TMU partner institution, an eligible institution in Asia or one of Tokyo’s sister/friendship cities and regions, or meet one of the other categories specified by TMU.

• Applicants must demonstrate English proficiency equivalent to CEFR B2 or higher, Japanese proficiency equivalent to JLPT N2 or higher, or satisfy an equivalent language requirement accepted by the relevant graduate school.

• Applicants must be willing to learn basic Japanese during their studies.

Study levels:

• Master’s degree — standard duration: 2 years.

• PhD degree — standard duration: 3 years.

Fields of study:
Programs are available across TMU graduate schools, including Humanities, Law and Politics, Management, Science, Urban Environmental Sciences, Systems Design, and Human Health Sciences.

The current scholarship guidelines include enrollment beginning in April 2027.
