Residency for Artists, Designers & Researchers

Medialab Matadero is offering three seven-month research and creation residencies for projects exploring the intersections of contemporary art, design, science, technology and society.

Program details:

• The residency runs from January to July 2027 and takes place in person in Madrid.

• Each selected project receives a €10,000 stipend before taxes.

• Residents receive an individual workspace at Matadero Madrid and access to facilities including a digital fabrication lab, meeting and presentation spaces, a sound booth, editing facilities and other technical resources.

• Medialab Matadero provides curatorial, technical and administrative support throughout the residency.

• For selected residents living outside Spain, the program covers up to one return economy-class trip to Madrid.

Who can apply:

• Individuals, collectives and non-profit organizations working across fields such as art, design, architecture, urbanism, film, photography, journalism, digital media, environmental science, philosophy, engineering, social sciences, political science, programming, materials science and activism.

• Both emerging and experienced profiles are welcome.

• Applicants must propose an original research and creation project with a critical, experimental or transdisciplinary approach.

• Projects should connect with one or more of Medialab Matadero's research themes and include a public dimension through workshops, seminars, conversations, presentations or other knowledge-sharing activities.

• Applicants must be adults. EU citizens are eligible; non-EU applicants must already have the legal authorization required to reside or remain in Spain throughout the residency.

Application requirements:

• Biographical summary and motivation letter.

• Portfolio of previous or related projects, up to 10 pages.

• A 1,000–2,000 word project proposal explaining the background, approach, objectives, methodology, schedule and communities involved.

• Preliminary proposal for public activities.

• A personal video presentation of the project of up to 3 minutes.

• Applications can be submitted in English or Spanish.
