Gulbenkian Research Fellowship in Lisbon

The Gulbenkian Institute for Advanced Study (GIAS) is accepting applications for its 2027/28 fellowship programme in Lisbon, Portugal.

The programme brings together scholars, independent researchers and practitioners from different countries and disciplines, giving fellows time and space to develop an original project in an international intellectual community.

Fellowship duration

Fellowships normally last between 3 and 8 months. The preferred option is an eight-month residency from September 15 to May 15, although shorter fall or spring fellowships may also be considered.

Eligibility

• Open to applicants of all nationalities

• Applications are welcomed from academics, emeritus scholars, independent researchers and practitioners of the arts

• A PhD is not formally required

• There are no specific academic degree requirements

• Knowledge of Portuguese is not required

• Applications are accepted from most fields, provided that the project does not require laboratory or experimental facilities and is not primarily practice- or application-oriented

Funding

The fellowship includes:

• A monthly stipend

• Travel expenses

• Family health insurance

• A partial housing allowance

• Assistance with finding accommodation when needed

• Support with finding schools for accompanying children

• Documentation to support visa applications

The exact value of the fellowship is determined according to the circumstances of each fellow.

Application requirements

Applicants must submit:

• A curriculum vitae

• A research/project proposal of up to three pages

• The names of two referees

The proposal should explain the project's main themes, academic or intellectual context, originality and the objectives of the applicant's stay at GIAS.

Location

Fellows are expected to reside in Lisbon, Portugal, for the duration of the fellowship. They receive individual office space and access to research facilities and university libraries in the Lisbon area.
