Description
Whizz is looking for a Tech Lead to take ownership of the company’s entire technical stack and lead a small engineering team. The role is hands-on and involves responsibility for architecture, code quality, databases, deployments and technical direction across several products. The Tech Lead reports directly to the company’s founder.
Responsibilities
Own the architecture and technical roadmap of Whizz’s systems.
Review pull requests before they are merged and maintain code review standards.
Design and maintain database architecture across MySQL and PostgreSQL.
Manage Docker images, deployments and development environments.
Promote AI-assisted development practices across the engineering team.
Turn product requirements into technical tasks.
Mentor backend, frontend and mobile developers.
Lead incident response and implement root-cause fixes.
Requirements
At least 6 years of backend development experience.
At least 2 years of experience leading an engineering team.
Expert knowledge of PHP 8.
Ability to work across PHP, TypeScript, Vue/Nuxt, React/Next.js and Flutter codebases.
Strong experience with database architecture, data modelling, migrations and query optimisation using MySQL and PostgreSQL.
Production experience with Docker.
Daily experience using AI development tools such as Claude Code, Cursor, Copilot or similar.
Experience creating instructions and workflows for AI coding agents.
Strong code review skills, including identifying logic, security and data-safety issues.
Experience with Stripe or another payment provider and REST API integrations.
Native Russian and fluent English.
Availability to work strictly on New York time (EST/EDT).
Tech stack
The company uses PHP 8.3 and ProcessWire for its core backend and billing systems, MySQL, Nuxt 3, Vue 3 and Quasar for its ERP and client area, Flutter for the mobile application, and Next.js, React and PostgreSQL for its People platform. Other tools include Stripe, Docker, CapRover, Metabase, Gogs and GitHub.
