The FRIAS Fellowship Programmes 2027/28 offer researchers the opportunity to focus on an independent project at the Freiburg Institute for Advanced Studies, University of Freiburg. Fellows become part of an international and interdisciplinary academic community and receive access to university resources, office space, libraries and individual support.
Available fellowships:
Early Career Fellowship
For researchers who completed their PhD within the eight years preceding the application deadline. Applicants must also have completed at least six months of research or study at an academic institution in a country other than the country where they received their first university degree. The fellowship lasts between four and ten months.
Senior Fellowship
For researchers with a PhD and at least eight years of postdoctoral experience. Applicants must have at least six months of international research or study experience. The fellowship lasts between three and eight months.
Sustainable Governance Fellowship for Researchers from Africa
For senior researchers of any nationality who are based at an African institution. Applicants must have a PhD, at least eight years of postdoctoral experience and relevant international academic experience. The programme supports research in the humanities and social sciences and lasts six months.
Applications are welcome from all academic disciplines that can be supported at the University of Freiburg, except for the Sustainable Governance Fellowship, which is limited to the humanities and social sciences.
Selected fellows receive a monthly living allowance, additional support for accommodation and a mobility allowance to help cover travel expenses. The exact funding arrangements depend on the selected fellowship programme.
