GroundwatCh is a two-year Erasmus Mundus Joint Master’s programme focused on groundwater, climate change and sustainable water management. Students study in three European countries: Portugal, the Netherlands and Germany. The programme consists of three taught semesters followed by a research-based Master’s thesis.
Programme structure
The first semester takes place at Instituto Superior Técnico in Lisbon, the second at IHE Delft in the Netherlands, and the third at TU Dresden in Germany. The fourth semester is dedicated to the Master’s thesis, which can be completed at one of the partner universities or in cooperation with an associated partner. The full programme is worth 120 ECTS.
Funding
Around 15 Erasmus Mundus scholarships are available for the 2027 intake. The scholarship covers tuition fees, library and laboratory costs, insurance and other mandatory participation costs. Scholarship holders also receive €1,400 per month for the entire two-year programme to help cover living expenses, travel and relocation costs.
Requirements
Applicants must hold a Bachelor’s degree equivalent to at least 180 ECTS in a relevant field, such as geology, geosciences, geography, environmental or climate sciences, or civil, environmental, agricultural or hydraulic engineering. Applicants should have strong academic results, sufficient knowledge of mathematics and proof of English-language proficiency.
Students who are still completing their Bachelor’s degree may also apply if they have already completed at least 120 ECTS. In this case, they must graduate by 15 August 2027 and provide a university statement confirming their expected graduation date.
Language
The programme is taught entirely in English. Applicants must provide proof of English proficiency through an accepted international language test. Applicants for the Erasmus Mundus Scholarship who do not yet have their English test results by the scholarship deadline may submit them until 1 February 2027.
Who can apply
The programme is open to international applicants. Russian citizens are eligible to apply and fall under the Partner Countries category for Erasmus Mundus scholarship purposes.
Deadline
For applicants from Partner Countries the Erasmus Mundus Scholarship deadline is 3 January 2027 at 23:59 Dutch time. Applications submitted after this date may still be considered for academic admission, but not for the full Erasmus Mundus Scholarship.
