Art Residency in Germany — Braunschweig Projects

Braunschweig University of Art (HBK Braunschweig) is offering seven funded fellowships for international visual and sound artists through its Braunschweig Projects programme for 2027/2028.

The programme provides artists with the opportunity to develop an independent artistic project while working in close proximity to HBK Braunschweig and its academic and artistic community.

Available fellowships:

• 5 fellowships in Visual Arts

• 2 fellowships in Sound Art

Each fellow is assigned a mentor from the Fine Arts department and can participate in artistic exchange with professors and other members of the university. Fellows will also present the development of their projects and participate in a joint final exhibition.

Funding and benefits:

• €1,600 monthly stipend for 12 months

• Rent-free studio apartment in Braunschweig

• Additional funding for project and travel expenses

• Access to HBK Braunschweig's artistic and academic environment

Fellows must pay approximately €250 per month towards incidental housing costs.

Eligibility:

• Applicants must have successfully completed a university degree in art

• The most recent art degree must have been completed after 1 April 2016 and before 1 April 2023

• Applicants must demonstrate substantial artistic practice and participation in exhibitions

• Applicants cannot receive regular salary payments, another residency/work fellowship or state funding during the fellowship period

• Applications can be submitted in English or German

There are no nationality restrictions stated in the call, and the programme is open to international artists.

Residency period:
The funding period starts on 1 April 2027. Accommodation is available from 15 April 2027. Fellows must spend at least 8 months in residence at HBK Braunschweig during the university's lecture periods and must participate in the Welcome Weeks from 19–30 April 2027.

Application requirements:

• Completed and signed application form

• Artist statement of up to 350 words

• Description of the proposed artistic project of up to 350 words

• Portfolio with 10–15 works

• Short CV including exhibitions, awards and fellowships

• Links to three video or audio files

• Diploma from the most recent art degree

Applicants must choose either Visual Arts or Sound Art; it is not possible to apply for both categories simultaneously.
